While everyone is trying to maximize their search engine optimization using every SEO strategy they can find, there are a few SEO tactics you should avoid using. The strategies mentioned below will in no way help you reach your goal, in some instances they might even encumber your advancement.
Do Not Try And Hide Links And Keywords On Your Web Pages
There are a few methods that are commonly used to try and hide links and content on pages. However, Google and its web spam team are smarter than you think. You will sometimes get a little boost from some of these tricks, but more often than not, you could find yourself penalized. Don’t;
• Use white text with a white background (or black on black for that matter)
• Try hiding text over an image
• Try and hide text with CSS
• Try and hide links or keywords by using tiny text
• Try and link from a comma, period or hyphen
Don’t Partake In Keyword Stuffing
Overdoing keywords is not a good idea. Besides trying to hide them (see above) others try and sneak them in using other methods. Don’t;
• Make use of the Meta Keywords Tags
• List your keywords using Title Tags
• Load your Meta Descriptions with keywords
• Use the character limit in your keywords to name images
• List each and every city within a 10 hour driving range
• Place keyword rich content below the footer
• Monitor keyword density in content
Don’t Use Any Link Networking Schemes
If you plan on using any of the link networking schemes, you shouldn’t. Don’t;
• Sign up for any link schemes
• Sign up for reciprocal linking
• Sign up for link farms
• Sign up for link wheel
• Sign up for link exchange
• Sign up for three way linking
Other link types to sidestep include these below. Don’t;
• Content/forum spam
• Submit to hundreds of directories for a small fee
• Launch sub-domains of your segmented content to try and link yourself
Don’t try and index or publish as many pages as humanly possible
With SEO, it is all about quality not quantity. Don’t try and get all your pages indexed. The amount of web pages you have indexed does not represent the amount of traffic you will get. Remove these tactics from your strategy. Don’t;
• Try and get all your search result pages indexed by the search engines
• Create and publish a new page for each new keyword
Don’t Try These Google Local Tricks
While there is still a little spam that works with Google Local, these are the tactics you should avoid at all costs. Don’t;
• Use location keywords in the places page categories
• Use the same address and create a number of different Google Places pages
• Try and antagonize your customers to get reviews (not all publicity is good publicity)
• Use diverse keyword rich business names on local sites
Don’t Try And Make Random Uselessness Work For You
These tactics should never be used, ever. Don’t;
• Measure the success of your website based on PageRank
• Get a page to rank well and then never change it
• Target keywords based purely on the fact that they are being used by your competitors
• Submit to numerous search engines automatically
• Try to use robots.txt to influence robot access
If any of these SEO tactics mentioned above are part of your future SEO campaign, cross them off your list immediately and think of other ways to go about increasing your search engine rankings.
